Summer Mini Session Announcement

Fairfax Mini Session

We have been looking at our calendar, trying to decide when to fit in spring mini sessions. Thanks to our wonderful clients, We don’t have many (or any!) open weekends. We are moving mini sessions to June 3 and 4 this year and calling them, “Hello Summer” minis. This is the perfect chance to “test the waters” of professional photography for your family. While not a full session, you will have a private proof viewing appointment with a custom slideshow of images.

As usual, some times will be indoors at the eKate Photography studio and some times will be outdoors. $50 retainer will hold your session, and as we get closer and the weather forecast comes out, we will decide which time slots are indoor and which are outdoor. You’ll then have the option to choose your day and time slot. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. If you are ready to reserve your session (you smart person, you), contact us using the form below!

Appointments are very limited and are reserved only after a contract is signed and retainer is received.

Who I Am Project – Model Call

Do you remember that awkward stage before you’d come into your own? Not quite child but not a teenager? Could you have used a confidence boost and a celebration of who you are with no pressure to be anything else?

Babies are so cute, new, and chubby, and everyone wants photos of them. Toddlers have those big, bright eyes do hilarious things all the time as they are learning how to basically be a human. Elementary age kids get lots of attention at first, but those tween ages are often forgotten. At ages 10-12, kids aren’t children anymore but aren’t quite teens. There is so much pressure put on kids as they get older that they may change completely, right before your eyes.

I’m making it my personal mission to capture those lost preteen years. The goal is to help tweens look and feel awesome and have unshakable confidence in themselves when they hit middle school.

In comes the “Who I Am” project!

We are starting the “Who I Am” photography project to fill in the forgotten photo years while enriching the lives of pre-teens. The main goal is to make pre-teens look and feel beautiful and in the years when everything feels wrong or awkward, we want them to be confident in who they are.

Who we’re looking for:

We are looking for female OR male models for our photography project, ages 10-12. We will ask the model and their parents a few questions, then combine the text and photographs to create a meaningful piece of art.

Why “Who I am”?

We want to capture the the personality of these tweens and record the last stage of their childhood before they become young adults. We want them to each realize their own true beauty and identity so that they are confident in themselves before they start middle school. Imagine the impact a single beautiful image can do for your tween’s self-image!

How to participate or nominate a friend:

Please e-mail us by Friday, January 20thEXTENDED TO JANUARY 27TH! if you are interested in having your child participate in this project, or if you would like to nominate a friend or family member who you think would be perfect for this. Please nominate people you believe would enjoy the boutique experience we provide. The in-studio session itself is complimentary and includes $50 in product credit (a total $245 value). Our goal is to create a gorgeous group of photos you’ll love and that truly show your child’s spirit and soul! Many people like to use these photos as birthday, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and “just because” gifts for their son/daughter. NO PURCHASE REQUIRED.

If you DO choose to purchase additional items, our portrait collections start at $1,085, or the minimum a la carte purchase is $300 (if you choose to spend more than the included print credit).

After you email us, we will send you specific details and you can decide if this project is perfect for your child.

New Products! Complimentary Matted Folios

I’m adding products to what I offer my clients and I’m really excited about it! Some of the new things I’m offering are mini press books (great for portrait albums!), a better selection and larger option for accordion books (currently one of my most popular products), and these amazing matted folios:

I fell in love with the first one I ordered.  These things have the sturdy feel and classy look of an album, combined with the display ability of a small framed print.  Perfect for desks and shelves.  Like I said, I love them.  They come in five different sizes with lots of cover material options.  I’m so excited about them that I am offering an 8×8 matted folio to the first three clients to book a portrait session with me after this announcement.  Just like I announced on my FB Page, it is the first three clients to book a new session for a date between now and May 6th.  I’m not yet offering these to all clients, so be the first to get one! ($150 Value).

I’m excited to announce that this month I am running a contest to win a free photo shoot!  Anyone can enter, and you can use the shoot for family portraits, engagement photos, headshots, or whatever you like (within the bounds of the law and good taste)!*  All entrants need to write a little paragraph about themselves and why they should win the free shoot.  Then, I will post all the entrants here on my blog.  Voting will be held for ten days, and whoever gets the most Facebook “likes” wins!  The winner will be announced on Christmas Eve.

Anyone who enters but doesn’t win the free shoot can still receive a “prize” in the form of a free 8×10 print if they book a session with me in 2012.

I will be accepting entries this week until the end of the day on December 9.  To enter and to receive more details about the contest, email me at  Please include your name(s), best way to reach you, and your blurb to be posted on the blog.  Make sure to state why you want photos and why you should win!

*Winner will receive credit for a free 2 hour photo shoot to be used in 2012.  Date and time are subject to my availability.  Shoot location will be worked out between myself and the contest winner, but will be local.  No more than 10 people in the shoot if you are entering as a family or group.  If you have any questions about this, feel free to email me.

Visit this page to view the entries and vote!

Name/Word Prints

This started as a craft project.  I had gotten tickets to the Redskins-Steelers game as an anniversary gift for Bart a few years ago.  I was buying them from a friend, and planned to “run into” her while Bart and I were at the grocery store (a grocery store we don’t normally go to).  I claimed I owed her money from something rugby related, and THAT was why I was handing her $140 in cash while in the checkout line…  Sketchy, right?  (and SBJ, you definitely didn’t make things any LESS sketchy).

Anyways, with this massively awkward attempt to hide something, and because I thought Bart knew SBJ had season tickets, I was positive he knew what his gift was.  Last minute, I decided to try to throw him off by making a name sign of our last name.  He loved it.  (I kept waiting for him to seem disappointed or confused, but it turns out he had no idea I had bought Redskins tickets.  I had gotten all stressed out for nothing, but what else is new…)

We hung our name sign up, and every time someone noticed it, they would either say they wanted one or that I should sell them.  Well, now I do!  It is kind of a fun side item for me, but I thought the holidays were a perfect time to offer them.  Here is what I wrote in my Holiday Newsletter:

Searching for that special gift?

Why not a customized name or word print?

Small Business Saturday/Shop Local

Saturday November 27th is Small Business Saturday.  American Express is promoting this by offering a $25 credit to cardholders who pledge to shop at a small business that day.  They are also offering $100 in free Facebook advertising to the first 10,000 business owners who sign up.  (Yes, please!)  So while I’m excited to have free advertising and the prospect of more clients, I also thought it would be good to promote some small local businesses that I love.

So pretty much everyone I know buys their gear at Adorama, B&H, Amazon, or eBay.  I am definitely NOT saying that there is anything bad about these places because I purchase things from them also.  But in the spirit of supporting small businesses, I thought I would share my favorite two local photography supply stores.  Ace Photo in Ashburn, VA is awesome.  They have TONS of stuff, are very helpful, and have extremely competitive prices.  They even have an on location studio you can rent!  Photocraft (Embassy Camera in DC) is in Burke, VA.  It is a really small store, but they have GREAT prices (just an example, I got a new body and new lens for less than they were REFURBISHED on Adorama).  Neither of these places sells any gray market goods, and it is really cool to be able to walk into a store and look at what you are buying.  They both have rentals, also.  The big difference between them is size:  Ace is huge and they usually have things in stock.  I got a slightly better deal at Photocraft, but what I wanted had to be ordered.

Not at all related to photography, but if you are out shopping at small businesses and looking for good pizza in the area the two best places, hands down, are Pomodoro Pizza Pasta & More in Fairfax Towne Center, and Tony’s Pizza in Fairlakes.  Try them out – you can thank me later 🙂
