Jen & Caroline – DC Engagement

Here is another engagement post that is long overdue. I’m getting ready to blog about their wedding and have to post this first!

Jen (SBJ – I don’t think I have ever called her Jen) and Caroline had their engagement shoot in DC around the Tidal Basin, the Lincoln Memorial, and the National Mall. They brought along their adorable (and surprisingly not uncooperative) dog Chimi.

I love these shots from either side of the bridge.

Chimi joined the party!

And this is my favorite of all three of them by the water.

I can’t wait to post more images of these two from their gorgeous and amazingly fun wedding. Look for those soon!

Kathy & Doff – Hirshhorn Engagement

Since I am getting ready to blog their wedding, I thought I had better catch up and blog their engagement shoot from a while back.

Kathy and Doff had part of their first date at the Hirshhorn, so that is where we went to do a very quick engagement shoot one weekday morning.

This is hands down my favorite museum.

I love all of the bold, graphic text. (By Barbara Kruger, Belief+Doubt)

Acrylic on canvas

Usually I know right away whether I prefer an image in color or black and white, and most times I shoot the image knowing what I want and intending it to be either color or black and white. I happen to love both versions of this.

These images have been published on multiple other wedding blogs already, but I wanted to finally publish them here. Their wedding photos will be coming soon!

I don’t even know what to write in this post. Maren is one of the most amazing people I have ever met in my life (and I’ve met a lot). She is beautiful inside and out, a true individual, and incredibly caring. She is understanding, accepting, extremely solid in her faith, and she doesn’t judge those who aren’t any of these things. She is really the kind of person who makes you want to be better at everything that you do. I wish she lived closer so that we could see her all the time, but luckily our families were together in South Dakota last summer and I was able to take her senior portraits then. We love you Maren!

We went out the night before and did some night shooting.

Then shot at the University of South Dakota:

I spotted this mural the day before and knew we had to use it.

The rest of these were taken at Valiant Vineyards:

Maren is also a photographer! Check her out: Maren Christine

My wonderful, hilarious, and cat-loving friend Molly contacted me about taking pictures of her as a gift for her husband. Did she go the normal, expected route and do something revealing? That depends on what your definition of revealing is… we did a shoot of just Molly and her two pet cats. She originally sent me links to Buzzfeed lists of ridiculous photos of people with their pets saying that this was the inspiration. I took that as tacky, weird, slightly uncomfortable, and hilarious. I think we accomplished what we set out to, and I doubt anyone could have done this as well as Molly did. What do you think?

My first attempt at creating a laser background…

After kind of getting the hang of making lasers in Photoshop, I couldn’t resist…

These are just a few of the bunch, and it was really hard to choose because they were all funny in their own way! This was hands down my favorite shoot to edit all year. Thanks Molly!

We went to Old Town Occoquan, VA for this engagement shoot with Kim and Travis. It was a little chilly at times, with some snow still on the ground in places and parts of the river frozen, but these two were troopers and looked great! We wanted to balance out all of the outdoor pictures so we got permission to shoot at Rockledge Mansion. The owner actually came by and opened it for us to use the inside! If you haven’t been there, you need to go.

Kim and Travis – thanks for hanging in there in the cold and I can’t wait to shoot your wedding this fall!

It was a little too shaded under this overpass. Reflector to the rescue and we had great light!

This is in the ballroom space of Rockledge Mansion. The room looked gorgeous with gold and white chairs and had great soft light coming in through the windows. This is basically the same shot with two very different exposures, but I loved them both and couldn’t post only one!

So it has been more than a year, but it feels like it was yesterday that Em and Rich were married. They had a gorgeous wedding in Pittsburgh with the ceremony at St. Bede’s Catholic Church and the reception at the Grand Hall. I grew up with Emily and she is still one of my closest friends. I don’t think I will EVER stop telling stories of when we went camping together in Hershey. Anyways, her wedding was lovely, as expected, and here are some of my favorite pics!

I love you Emmy!

Thanks to Manny Nguyen for second shooting!

I don’t blog very often, so in an attempt to catch up, here is a family session from this past fall.

Her facial expressions are awesome.

Inside the mill and posing with mom and dad.

While we did get some family photos of everyone together, she didn’t sit still for long! Here she jumped right up and came at me smiling and ready to inspect my camera 🙂

Alicia and Geoff were married in front of their close friends and family, followed by a reception at Ristorante Renato, right in downtown Fredericksburg. These two were referred to me by a friend (thanks again, Jen!), and after going down to Fredericksburg to meet them and look at the church and restaurant, I knew I would really enjoy photographing them. They were laid back, trusting, and again were more concerned about the people there to celebrate with them than the “details.” Not only did we get a group picture outside of the church of EVERYONE in attendance all together (I travel with a ladder as my 5’2″ self is not cutting it), we stopped after finishing the couple’s portraits, and guests/families came out one by one to get individual pictures with the bride and groom. We were able to get pictures of the bride and groom with every single person at the wedding, and it was organized, easy, and quick.

Their reception was lots of fun, with the cousins serenading the couple and the couple having activities for the tables to complete. This was such an awesome, fun wedding. You could see their personalities in all of it, it was simple and down to earth while still interesting and lively, and people (myself included) had a wonderful time. Congratulations Geoff and Alicia!

Thanks to Andrew Fritz for second shooting!
