Who I Am Project – Model Call

Do you remember that awkward stage before you’d come into your own? Not quite child but not a teenager? Could you have used a confidence boost and a celebration of who you are with no pressure to be anything else?

Babies are so cute, new, and chubby, and everyone wants photos of them. Toddlers have those big, bright eyes do hilarious things all the time as they are learning how to basically be a human. Elementary age kids get lots of attention at first, but those tween ages are often forgotten. At ages 10-12, kids aren’t children anymore but aren’t quite teens. There is so much pressure put on kids as they get older that they may change completely, right before your eyes.

I’m making it my personal mission to capture those lost preteen years. The goal is to help tweens look and feel awesome and have unshakable confidence in themselves when they hit middle school.

In comes the “Who I Am” project!

We are starting the “Who I Am” photography project to fill in the forgotten photo years while enriching the lives of pre-teens. The main goal is to make pre-teens look and feel beautiful and in the years when everything feels wrong or awkward, we want them to be confident in who they are.

Who we’re looking for:

We are looking for female OR male models for our photography project, ages 10-12. We will ask the model and their parents a few questions, then combine the text and photographs to create a meaningful piece of art.

Why “Who I am”?

We want to capture the the personality of these tweens and record the last stage of their childhood before they become young adults. We want them to each realize their own true beauty and identity so that they are confident in themselves before they start middle school. Imagine the impact a single beautiful image can do for your tween’s self-image!

How to participate or nominate a friend:

Please e-mail us by Friday, January 20thEXTENDED TO JANUARY 27TH! if you are interested in having your child participate in this project, or if you would like to nominate a friend or family member who you think would be perfect for this. Please nominate people you believe would enjoy the boutique experience we provide. The in-studio session itself is complimentary and includes $50 in product credit (a total $245 value). Our goal is to create a gorgeous group of photos you’ll love and that truly show your child’s spirit and soul! Many people like to use these photos as birthday, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and “just because” gifts for their son/daughter. NO PURCHASE REQUIRED.

If you DO choose to purchase additional items, our portrait collections start at $1,085, or the minimum a la carte purchase is $300 (if you choose to spend more than the included print credit).

After you email us, we will send you specific details and you can decide if this project is perfect for your child.

Katy & Shamena – DC Wedding Photography

Katy and Shamena were married over a year ago in DC, and their wedding photos have been published in other blogs, but not mine yet! So long awaited, here they are.
Katy played rugby for NOVA Women, while she was in the States a while back, but our playing didn’t overlap. We had a few mutual rugby friends, though. Katy happened to see wedding photos I had posted of another rugby couple and decided to contact me about her own wedding. I’m so happy she did. Katy and Shamena traveled from the UK to be married in DC.  You won’t see the photos here, but these two have a hilarious sense of humor that is completely my style (I may or may not have a picture of Katy covering up part of a statue engraving to make it seem like the word actually says “ERECT”). I tell people all the time that I become friends with a lot of my clients and I really feel like that is true. Thanks for being my friends, Katy and Shamena!!!

The two of them were married at Marriage, DC in Dupont by the always wonderful Tiffany Newman. (I highly recommend her!). This happened to be the day of a torrential downpour. We are talking flooded streets, closed roads, storm sewers over flowing, etc. Basically the day was perfect. You can tell by their faces that this was tons of fun and they were perfectly happy, and would have been no matter the weather. I truly enjoyed getting to know them and trekking through the monsoon with them.

Look at their beautiful red outfits!

They were photobombed by someone familiar…

I’m always kind of excited when couples want a picture with me (and they invited me to join in the celebration since my “time on the clock” was up).
Thanks ladies and congratulations again, over a year later :)

Thank you to Jon Fleming for assisting me in the downpour!!!

Jen & Caroline – DC Engagement

Here is another engagement post that is long overdue. I’m getting ready to blog about their wedding and have to post this first!

Jen (SBJ – I don’t think I have ever called her Jen) and Caroline had their engagement shoot in DC around the Tidal Basin, the Lincoln Memorial, and the National Mall. They brought along their adorable (and surprisingly not uncooperative) dog Chimi.

I love these shots from either side of the bridge.

Chimi joined the party!

And this is my favorite of all three of them by the water.

I can’t wait to post more images of these two from their gorgeous and amazingly fun wedding. Look for those soon!

Kathy & Doff – Hirshhorn Engagement

Since I am getting ready to blog their wedding, I thought I had better catch up and blog their engagement shoot from a while back.

Kathy and Doff had part of their first date at the Hirshhorn, so that is where we went to do a very quick engagement shoot one weekday morning.

This is hands down my favorite museum.

I love all of the bold, graphic text. (By Barbara Kruger, Belief+Doubt)

(Right image) Kenneth Noland American, b. Asheville, North Carolina, 1924–2010

Usually I know right away whether I prefer an image in color or black and white, and most times I shoot the image knowing what I want and intending it to be either color or black and white. I happen to love both versions of this.
Paul Jenkins American, b. Kansas City, Missouri, 1923–2012

Morris Louis American, b. Baltimore, Maryland, 1912–1962

These images have been published on multiple other wedding blogs already, but I wanted to finally publish them here. Their wedding photos will be coming soon!

I don’t even know what to write in this post. Maren is one of the most amazing people I have ever met in my life (and I’ve met a lot). She is beautiful inside and out, a true individual, and incredibly caring. She is understanding, accepting, extremely solid in her faith, and she doesn’t judge those who aren’t any of these things. She is really the kind of person who makes you want to be better at everything that you do. I wish she lived closer so that we could see her all the time, but luckily our families were together in South Dakota last summer and I was able to take her senior portraits then. We love you Maren!

We went out the night before and did some night shooting.

Then shot at the University of South Dakota:

I spotted this mural the day before and knew we had to use it.

The rest of these were taken at Valiant Vineyards:

Maren is also a photographer! Check her out: Maren Christine

My wonderful, hilarious, and cat-loving friend Molly contacted me about taking pictures of her as a gift for her husband. Did she go the normal, expected route and do something revealing? That depends on what your definition of revealing is… we did a shoot of just Molly and her two pet cats. She originally sent me links to Buzzfeed lists of ridiculous photos of people with their pets saying that this was the inspiration. I took that as tacky, weird, slightly uncomfortable, and hilarious. I think we accomplished what we set out to, and I doubt anyone could have done this as well as Molly did. What do you think?

My first attempt at creating a laser background…

After kind of getting the hang of making lasers in Photoshop, I couldn’t resist…

These are just a few of the bunch, and it was really hard to choose because they were all funny in their own way! This was hands down my favorite shoot to edit all year. Thanks Molly!
