School Photo Series 5

Every few days, I’m going to share a reason school photos so often end up disappointing kids and parents alike.

Reason 5 – Terrible Backgrounds/Lighting/Editing.

Have you ever seen the school photos that have the fake outdoor background? Maybe it was obviously a flat picture of a three dimensional object? Maybe the scene was outdoor but the floor was indoor school carpet or tile? Whatever the telltale signs were, those outdoor backdrops have to be used correctly and lit correctly to work well.

I’ve also seen those “wonderful” school photos that are over edited to the point of skin looking so blurry it seems to be glowing. It almost seems like some companies use an all or nothing approach to editing/retouching. Some of the photos I’ve seen are worse than celebrity selfies when it comes to bad and obvious retouching!

Is your child’s artificial looking school picture leaving you disappointed? eKate Photography’s School Picture Makeup Day is the solution! November 4th from 12pm-2pm in the eKate studio.

Reason 4 – Fake Smiles.

Cheesy big smiles aren’t always bad! If your kid is truly excited and smiles that way naturally, I think they are awesome! What isn’t awesome are the forced, fake smiles.

Photographers just trying to get through the day probably don’t care whether a smile looks real or fake, and they might not even know the difference. Some kids are much more comfortable than others, and photographers need to be aware of that and adjust their approach accordingly.

I come ready with lots of kid friendly jokes, weird props, and even potty humor when needed (what kid doesn’t laugh at potty talk?). Laughing and huge smiles are always better than tame and polished fake ones.

Is your child’s forced/fake smile making you cringe? eKate Photography’s School Picture Makeup Day is the solution! November 4th from 12pm-2pm in the eKate studio.

Reason 3 – Awkward Posing.

How many of us have had or have seen a school picture with that awkward head tilt that looks unnatural and uncomfortable?? Or one that has a kid sitting up so unnaturally straight you wonder what put her on edge?

It irks me to no end when I hear someone instructing a 5-9 year old to “tilt you head slightly down about an inch.” A. most kids that age don’t have a concept of distance that small in relation to body movements, and B. most kids are going to hear “You’re doing this wrong and I need to correct you.”

Either option results in awkward and uncomfortable photos. I let kids stand instead of sit so that they can be more comfortable, and I give them the chance to pose naturally. Yes, I still adjust their posing some, but I do it in a fun and cooperative way!

Think your kid’s school picture should be turned into a meme about awkwardness? eKate Photography’s School Picture Makeup Day to the rescue! November 4th from 12pm-2pm in the eKate studio.

Reason 2 – Food.

You may be wondering, “What does food have to do with school photos?” You’d hope nothing, but usually school photo companies are working all day at your school and if your child’s class picks the short straw, they get to take school photos AFTER lunch.

Since most school photos are unedited, you get to see ketchup stains, milk mustaches, crumb face, and even food in teeth. Sounds like a dream photo to cherish for all time, right? I’ve even seen photos with food in kids’ hair!

Got leftovers on your face? eKate Photography’s School Picture Makeup Day to the rescue! November 4th from 12pm-2pm in the eKate studio.

Reason 1 – Glasses glare.

A kid with glasses will usually run into one of two scenarios: photographer at school says nothing, and photos come back with glare visible OR photographer at school is aware of glare, and begins to instruct student to turn head this way, then that, then lower your chin two inches, push your glasses up .75 inches… By the time the picture is taken, the student usually looks and feels incredibly awkward (and also self-conscious), but hey! No glare!

How do you avoid this? Set the light to the side/above/not directly in front of glasses. This is as easy as avoiding red eye, but harder to correct when it does happen. A photographer who takes the time to adjust the light angle and position while letting the student remain comfortable and confident is what you need here.

Got glare? eKate Photography’s School Picture Makeup Day to the rescue! November 4th from 12pm-2pm in the eKate studio.

Fall Mini Session time!

I know multiple people have been waiting patiently for this – Fall minis this year will be October 28th and 29th!

Not sure you want to commit to a full session? Don’t think your kids will last through a full session? This is the perfect option for you. Even though the session itself is only 20 minutes, you will have a private proof viewing appointment in studio with a custom slideshow of images.

This year, we are planning both days outdoors. $50 retainer will hold your session. You’ll then have the option to choose your day and time slot. SATURDAY OCTOBER 28th will be at Van Dyck Park in Fairfax. SUNDAY OCTOBER 29th will be at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park in Chantilly. With minis, we always try to keep the appointment times and locations outdoors. If it is absolutely not possible because of high wind or heavy rain, you will have the option to either move indoors at the eKate Photography studio, or use our backup date of November 5th.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. If you are ready to reserve your session, contact us using the form below!

Appointments are very limited and are reserved only after a contract is signed and retainer is received.

School Picture Make Up Day

Who has had a bad school picture? Or, maybe I should ask who HASN’T had a bad school picture?

If any of these sound familiar, come by the studio for school picture make up day! Did you know you don’t HAVE to buy school pictures? Many schools get no benefit for your order. But what about all those prints of your child?! The only reason the big companies print all of those and send them home is exactly because you will be guilted into buying them!

On November 4th, we’ll be at the eKate studio from 12pm-2pm where you can drop in to get photos you REALLY want to give out to family. Only pay for what you want to print, and we have different print packages available similar to what is offered in school.

Santa Sessions!

Do you HATE waiting in line at the mall every year? I know the feeling. My kids even get sick of it and ask why we are waiting in a ridiculous line to see Santa, because they are hungry/tired/bored/screaming/etc.

Now you don’t have to wait in that line! For $15, you can reserve a spot on December 2nd. Bring your kiddos and have milk and cookies, do a seasonal craft, and get photos with a natural-beard Santa!

Here is how it will work: Once you sign up for a time slot (2pm, 3pm, 4pm) and pay the $15, you’re in. On December 2, you’ll show up at your appointment time along with four other families, and check in. That’s the longest you could possibly be waiting in line – behind four other families. Each of the five families signed up during that hour are guaranteed to get photos during that hour. There’s no rushing (we have other families, so you can’t hang with Santa forever, but you will get to chat with him!), and kids will have activities and snacks while they wait!

Once you get your photos taken, you will see them right away and decide which ones you’d like as prints or image files. ONLY PAY FOR WHAT YOU WANT TO KEEP! Reserve your space now: https://ekate.simplybook.me/v2/#book

Along with prints, we will have holiday cards, ornaments, and MORE!

Drop in space will be dependent upon availability AFTER reserved slots are filled. If you don’t want to risk it, sign up now!
